The Joint Commission has released its list of the most cited standards for 2009. Unsurprisingly, the list contains many Life Safety Code and Environment of Care standards, primarily regarding fire safety, which have been prominent in previous lists of top-cited standards by the accrediting body.

The top three most-cited standards for hospitals from January 1 through December 31, 2009 were:

  • 49%, RC.01.01.01: accuracy of medical records
  • 48%, LS.02.01.10: requirements to minimize fire, smoke, and heat in the event of a fire
  • 46%, LS.02.01.20: means of egress requirements
