President Barack Obama has appointed Donald Berwick, MD, president and co-founder of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) administrator. Berwick, who was nominated for the position back in March, was supposed to have gone through a Senate confirmation hearing. However, President Obama has decided to bypass the Senate hearing and appoint Berwick.
