CDC: Hospital-acquired infections are declining, but still dangerous

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week released a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that surveyed 11,282 patients treated at 183 hospitals in 10 states in 2011. Researchers found that at any point in time, 4% had at least one infection transmitted within the acute care setting, according to HealthLeadersMedia.
The study estimated that 648,000 patients battled 721,800 healthcare-associated infections in 2011; in 2007, the figure was believed to be 1.7 million and in the 1970s, the rate was 2.1 million.
