The Joint Commission’s deeming authority for hospital accreditation has been renewed by the CMS, effective July 15, 2014 through July 15, 2020. The CMS evaluated The Joint Commission’s standards and survey process and found they met or exceeded the CMS requirements.

Deemed authority means The Joint Commission can survey hospitals for compliance with CMS requirements for participation in Medicare. Organizations have the choice of being surveyed by either The Joint Commission (or another accreditor) or state surveyors on behalf of CMS.
