The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is accepting public comments through February 25 on a proposed rule that establishes national emergency preparedness requirements for Medicare- and Medicaid-participating providers and suppliers. According to the CMS, many of the proposed requirements align with The Joint Commission’s standards, rationales, and elements of performance. The rule would ensure that hospitals and other healthcare providers and suppliers are prepared for natural and man-made disasters. It also describes the need to coordinate with federal, state, and local emergency preparedness systems, and prepare to meet the needs of patients, residents, and clients during disasters and other emergencies.
