Joint Commission prepublication standards aligning with CMS go into effect next week

New standards from The Joint Commission designed to align with the CMS will go into effect on July 2. The accreditor released the prepublication standards last week.

The revised standards include EC.02.02.01 (managing hazardous materials and waste risks), EC.02.03.01 (managing fire risks), EC.02.05.03 (having a reliable emergency electrical power source), MM.03.01.01 (safe medication storage), MS.03.01.03 (practitioner with appropriate privileges manages patient care, treatment, and services), and PC.03.01.01 (hospital plans operative or high-risk procedures including those that require moderate or deep sedation or anesthesia).
